During my sophomore year of college, I started watching Star Trek on a weekly basis. And, I was surprised how much I liked it. I didn’t tell anyone I watched it though because I didn’t want to be considered “uncool.” Since then, I have been a closeted fan of science fiction…that is until Battlestar Galactica, the new version. I am no longer afraid to admit my love for what might be considered nerdy viewing material. I am not ready to go to a Battlestar Galactica convention dressed like a cylon. (part human/part machine character on bsg) But, I did spend a good two hours one evening looking at clips of the show spliced together with cheesy love songs playing in the background. I watched all the bonus material and made it through 4 seasons in a month…this is hundreds of viewing hours for those questioning my addiction. I found myself driving in my car, cooking dinner, talking to a friend and thinking about whether or not Starbuck and Lee would get together or who the final cylon was. For those kindred spirits who watch this show, you will know that these topics are worthy of some intense thought and speculation.

I would have finished season 4 if it weren’t for the writers strike. I was left hanging in the balance with my beloved saga of human vs. machine still close to my heart. After watching a few YouTube clips in my office the other day, I decided to update myself on when the heck the rest of season 4 would be released. I am twitterpated!

1. December 12-new webisodes will be released.

2. January 16-March-The rest of season four, including the show finale will air on the sci-fi channel.

3. Sometime after this point a BSG made-for-tv-movie called “The Plan” will air.

4. 2010 a new spin-off series called Caprica will air, with an amazing cast to boot. (Eric Stoltz, Polly Walker, Paula Malcolmson and Esai Morales.

For those of you out there who think BSG is nerdy, you are idiots, seriously. After seeing some of the best shows on television being canceled (Pushing Daisies, Freaks and Geeks, Wonderfalls, and Arrested Development) because they aren’t as boring as How I Met Your Mother (not even worthy to be hyperlinked), I just have to question the taste of most TV viewers. I dare you to watch two episodes of the new BSG and not be caught up in this fantastic story. If you don’t like it, you have bad taste, and you think going out to The Olive Garden is a fancy feast. Or, you are probably wearing a sweater, right now, with a cat or Christmas tree on it.  Or, you wear flesh colored nylons. Or, you put a Baby on Board sign in your car window…the list can obviously go on.

A friend of mine passed away a number of years ago. She was like 23.  She died from a brain aneurism.  It was so sad.  We still miss her and think of her often!  This bench is for the library at Ukiah Junior Academy and the shelves will be filled with books that Lisa loved.  The bench was made by Mel Brass.  I designed and painted the bench.

I like to buy prints from indie artists and change them around in simple black frames. It is a cheap way to have great art and variety on your walls.

My selection wouldn’t be complete without some great photo prints. I love the scratchy, muted look to these.

I’ve been writing a piece on discovery and exploration. As I was researching material, I came across these videos, The Long Way Round.

“Long Way Round is a documentary detailing the 20,000-mile motorcycle trip he took around the world with best friend Charley Boorman over 115 days. Their trip took them from London through locales such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, and Canada, to name a few, before ending in New York. Armed with a cameraman, McGregor and Boorman encounter separation anxiety from their families; a shifty stranger (later revealed to be Mafia) who leads them through winding dark corridors to a posh hotel room; delays at international borders; hosts who offer them Fear Factor-level animal parts for dinner; injuries, equipment breakdowns, and more.”

I watched the first video last night, three hours, and I loved every minute of it. I put the disc in the mail this morning and can’t wait until the next one comes.

I also came across a book called Jungle by Yossi Ghinsberg.
